AUDITION NOTICE - MONSTER

Performance Dec 6/7 2024

Submission Deadline: 23 August
Email: hellodirecttheatre@gmail.com

We are casting for a fully staged concert version of Monster, a musical about Medusa, written by Florence Reiher and Jill Raymond. This production is a development of the show which Sold-Out the 2023 Vancouver Fringe, and is being co-presented by the Vancouver Fringe as part of their ‘Best of Fest’ off-season programming. We are seeking singer/actors who move well and are able to work in tight harmony.

Monster is a new musical based on the many iterations of the legend of Medusa, and the Gods and mortals in her life - and death. Behind the infamous effigy is a very human (and often hidden) story of Medusa, which is a tale of all times, uncovered and brought to life.

We encourage anyone interested in this production to submit, including those who we have worked with before. If we are familiar with your work we will consider you during the casting process and may call you in at the time of callbacks.

Roles being cast in this production:

THE MUSES (Nine Roles - the Muses also cover many ensemble roles including the Townsfolk of Athens / The Priestesses, and may double some secondary characters) (Female/AFAB/Non-Binary/Female-Presenting) Ranging from: Ab3 - E5, in sections

The Muses are the Greek Chorus for the production providing commentary and narrative discussion within the piece. They each have their own personalities, and the roles require more dance and musical training due to the tight harmonies and group movement numbers.

MEDUSA (Female-presenting role) Range: Ab3 - F5

Medusa is a gorgon, born from the sea, although her appearance is of a beautiful human woman until she is cursed. She is sensitive, curious, and adventurous.

ATHENE (Female-presenting role) Range: G3 - E5

Athene is the Goddess of Wisdom, Reason, Warfare, Strategical Thinking (and Handicrafts!). She is strong, stubborn, and proud. She curses Medusa to become the monster that we know from the story, and assists Perseus in his quest to kill her. She is the daughter of Zeus, and the niece of Poseidon, God of the Sea.

POSEIDON (Male-presenting role) Range: C3 - G4

Poseidon is the God of the Sea, is brother to Zeus (the King of Gods) and uncle to Athene. He is charming, calculated, and ruthless. He attempts to seduce Medusa as a means to get back at Athene, who became the City Deity over him. He doesn’t accept rejection.

ENSEMBLE (Any gender)

The Ensemble are strong singer/actors who move well who can fit into many roles as cast within the production, the Ensemble may also understudy the leads.

*Please note the role of Perseus is already cast.
